Programs

Buffalo State currently offers several programs with an emphasis on the environment and environmental issues

New and current undergraduate students at Buffalo State can enroll in the Environmental Science and Society certificate program. The certificate is also a stand-alone program that can be taken by people interested in the environmental field who want to learn new skills or build on their existing knowledge to open up exciting job possibilities.

As an undergraduate, students in any major can pursue a minor in Environmental Science or Environment & Society (see info below). Students can major in Environmental Geography (see info below) or take environmentally-oriented coursework in many other major programs like, biology, earth science, philosophy, or sociology.

Buffalo State also offers environmental programs at the graduate level.  We offer two Master's programs in Great Lakes Environmental Science (GLES).  The M.A. is a traditional, thesis-based program and the M.S. is an internship-based Professional Science Master's (PSM) program (see more info below).

  • Highly-motivated Buffalo State undergraduate students can begin their graduate degree in the GLES M.S. program via a 4+1 pathway.  The pathway initiates graduate-level coursework at the undergraduate level, providing students with seamless entry to the master’s degree program and an accelerated course of study toward an advanced degree. Students in programs leading to a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, earth sciences, environmental geography, or geology should consider this pathway to an advanced degree.

Environmental Science Minor

The environmental science minor is designed to provide a broad base of knowledge in the various natural science disciplines that compose environmental science. The minor gives students the background necessary to understand and evaluate complex environmental issues. The program also provides a basic understanding of the interrelationships of the physical, biological, and human dimensions of the environment.

This minor is offered by the Earth Sciences and Science Education Department:

160 Science and Math Complex
1300 Elmwood Ave
Buffalo, NY 14222

Environment and Society Minor

The Minor in Environment and Society offers students an opportunity for comprehensive interdisciplinary study of "human-environment" interactions, providing the skills to think holistically about environmental problems and solutions. The "Core" courses are particularly geared toward developing an understanding of the environment as socially constructed and interactive rather than as an objective reality.

This minor is offered by the Sociology Department:

Environmental Geography, B.S.

Environmental geography is a subfield in geography that explores human-environment interactions. The B.S. in Environmental Geography provides students with the opportunity to study how humans impact, manage, and conserve the natural environment, including landforms, water and soil resources, climate, and plant and animal communities. Courses in the program focus on understanding processes and patterns in the natural environment, as well as quantitative analysis and applied, hands-on experiences in the classroom and in the field.

This major is offered by the Geography and Planning Department:

Great Lakes Environmental Science, M.A.

The master of arts in Great Lakes environmental science program offers a strong foundation in environmental science and allows students to approach problems from a purely scientific perspective. Graduates are trained to effectively deal with a broad range of problems and issues related to ecosystem structure and function within the Great Lakes and surrounding watersheds, which prepares them for advanced research, professional employment, or study at the Ph.D. level.

This master's program is offered by the Great Lakes Center:

Alexander Y. Karatayev, Great Lakes Center Director
Chris Pennuto, Program Coordinator

Great Lakes Environmental Science, M.S.

The master of science in Great Lakes ecosystem science program combines coursework in environmental science with communication and project management classes and an internship experience. The M.S. program is designed to meet the needs of industry, consulting firms, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and governmental agencies, preparing graduates for leadership roles as they address a wide range of problems and issues related to the management of resources within the Great Lakes and surrounding watersheds.
